People ask about how we number ShillerLearning lesson books
First it's helpful to know that while charter schools typically order books and manipulatives separately, with ShillerLearning families typically order Kits that contain all the books, manipulatives, and songs for several years of study
Each ShillerLearning lesson book has a number or letter
Math Kit I, usually used for pre-Kindergarten through grade 3, has lesson books 1, 2, and 3. Math Kit II, usually used from grades 4 through pre-algebra, has lesson books 4, 5, and 6. The Fractions kit has lesson book F.
Language Arts Kit A, usually used for pre-Kindergarten through grade 2, has lesson books 1, 2, 3 and 4. Language Arts Kit B, usually used from grades 1 through 4, has lesson books 5, 6, 7, and 8.
The numbers have no meaning except to specify a sequence. It's good for students to know this as well: Book 1 isn't necessarily for first grade, and Book 5 isn't necessarily for fifth grade. So for example, you won't see the typical visuals that appeal only to Kindergarteners or first graders in Book 1, because it's possible that third or even fifth graders may be using a Book 1 lesson to fill holes in their knowledge, and we don't want them to feel that the material is inappropriate for their age.
The Fractions book has a letter but no number because it is designed to be used simultaneously with the other lesson books. Typically students will work a little bit on Fractions, then on book 1 or 2, then some more on fractions, then on book 3 when they've finished books 1 and 2, on fractions again, and so on. A student will finish fractions while in Lesson Book 6. (The Fractions Book cannot be completed until a certain lesson in Book 6.)
And of course, along with each lesson book comes a separate answer guide.
The ShillerLearning philosophy is that each student proceeds at his or her own individual pace, so that students work at their potential, not at some external and often arbitrary expectation from school or government bureaucracy.
