The ShillerLearning Philosophy

ShillerLearning's mission is for children to reach their full learning potential. Our language arts and math curricula are based on the philosophy that:

1

Each student deserves a personalized education specific to that student: The only appropriate label is the student's name

2

Students have different learning styles: visual, tactile, auditory, and kinesthetic: A successful curriculum must address them all

3

Each student learns at his or her own pace: Focus and concentration skills are only developed when students are allowed to achieve closure

4

Students aren't taught; they learn. Only by hitting obstacles, negotiating roadblocks, and finally getting to "Aha!" will children love and excel at learning

We believe that a curriculum with the flexibility to focus in and build on each student's individual strengths will maximize test scores through real foundational learning. ShillerLearning achieves this goal by providing engaging and Montessori-based lessons that meet (and usually exceed) NCTM, state, and common core standards using all the learning styles, ensuring each child reaches his or her full potential.

An update from Larry Shiller

Have you ever read something that expressed your thoughts better than you ever could have hoped (and better than you ever have)?

Well, that happened to me when I read "A Mathematician's Lament" by Paul Lockhart, a mathematician and teacher.

If you want to know what inspires me to help students learn and love math, read this 25-page opinion piece. I think you'll be inspired, too.
